The Vatican City is the smallest nation in the world, comprising
of only 13 acres of land, St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican
Palace and Museum, with gardens and neighboring buildings.
Derived from the early Papal State of central Italy, Popes ruled
over much of the region, which at its height exceeded 16,000
square miles and 3 million people. By May 13, 1871 the Papal
State was incorporated into Italy and the Pope's rule was
confined to the area now known as the Vatican City. On February
11, 1929, The Treaty of Conciliation was signed between the
Vatican and Italy which established the independent state of the
Vatican and provided for the special status of Catholicism as the
Italian state religion. The sovereign of the Vatican is Pope
John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyla in Poland. He is the first non-
Italian Pope in 456 years. In 1984 the United States resumed
diplomatic relations with the Vatican, after repealing a ban on
relations with the Vatican since 1867. @
